Haiku and Tanka from Big Sur

sung to sleep by
sea lions
above the jade green surf

mist creeps up the
mountain from the
silver sea

hunting jade
among greygreen
sea stones
lost in white
mist magic

  2. I hiked in the Big Sur several years ago, and will never forget sitting on a rock to eat lunch and seeing a stunning-looking golden California couple, each with a toddler on their backs, running in sports sandals through this steep, fairly rough and rocky mountain terrain. It spun my head around. I thought "gazelles." And I thought "dangerous."
